Brass astrolabe on a black stone base - BN-2088Z
Astrolabe, also known as an armillary sphere, is one of the most important astronavigation inventions in human history. Astrolabes were used by the greatest minds of medieval times, including Nicolaus Copernicus. It was used to determine ecliptic and equatorial coordinates and perform various mathematical and astronomical calculations, such as determining the time of sunrise and sunset, length of day, astronomical altitude of the sun and stars.
At the center of the astrolabe is the Earth surrounded by rings representing the equator, the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, and the zodiacal ring.
As a symbol of mankind's quest to know the universe, the astrolabe will work well as a unique gift for a scientist, astrophysicist and university employee. It is also a beautiful decoration for a study or living room with a scientific flair.
