Cappuccino Quadrant - 15th century replica - Gift for astronomer or sailor - H28

Quadrant is a historical navigational and astronomical instrument that was used to measure the height of celestial bodies (e.g. sun, stars) above the horizon. In practice, it was used mainly in:

  • astronomy - for observing and charting the sky,
  • shipping - to determine the latitude of a ship.

Its name derives from the fact that in the best known version of this sundial, the path of the pearl in both tropics traced two lines that resembled the hood worn by Capuchin monks. Its origin dates back to the 15th century, although it is not possible to say for sure.

Quadrant is made of zamak (zinc-aluminum alloy), set on an elegant wooden base. The replica is characterized by high quality craftsmanship and durability. Carefully embossed details and a solid finish make it an exceptional collector's item. The replica has been calibrated to a latitude of 51.5°N,

It is a perfect decoration for an office, library or vintage-style interior, but also an excellent gift for an astronomy, science history or nautical enthusiast.

Product information:

  • Width: 8 cm
  • Replica of a quadrant from the 15th century
  • Ideal for collectors and lovers of vintage style items
  • Ornament for office, study or library in retro style

How did the quadrant work?

  1. Sailor or astronomer held the instrument vertically.
  2. He aimed at a celestial body through the sight.
  3. Weight indicated the value of the angle on the scale.
  4. This angle above the horizon allowed:
    1. calculate latitude (at sea),
    2. determine position and time (in astronomy).

Interesting facts:

  • Quadrants were used as early as the Middle Ages and at the time of the great geographical discoveries.
  • They were later replaced by sextants, which were more accurate and easier to use.
  • The famous astronomer Tycho Brahe used very large quadrants for accurate observations of stars even before the invention of the telescope.
