A crossbow is a projectile weapon that uses the energy stored in an elastic string to fire a projectile. Although crossbows are primarily associated with the Middle Ages, their history goes back much further. Crossbows played a key role in many historic battles, including: at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, where the Normans used them to defeat the Anglo-Saxons. Crossbows were also used during the Crusades, Hussite Wars, and the Hundred Years' War.

In the 16th century, crossbows gradually began to give way to firearms. However, they were still used for hunting and target shooting. In the 19th century, there was an increase in interest in crossbows as historical weapons. Crossbows were often seen as dishonorable weapons because they allowed for long-range kills without being in immediate danger. As a result, crossbows were sometimes banned in some countries. Despite their dark history, crossbows are still fascinating objects that arouse the interest of historians, military enthusiasts and collectors.
