An astrolabe is a measuring instrument used in astronomy and navigation from ancient times to the beginning of the 18th century, used to determine the position of celestial bodies above the horizon and to determine your own position. They were used by Copernicus, Galileo, Hevelius, and thousands of sailors lost in the seas and oceans. The era of the astrolabe ended only with the introduction of the sextant. Interestingly, from 1813 until today its representation appears on the coat of arms of Portugal.

The astrolabe remains a symbol of faith in progress, science, and technology. At the same time, it expresses the human longing for what has passed, for a certain lifestyle, for journeys into the unknown, for adventures. It takes us both to the times of great sailing ships and the quiet rooms of medieval astronomers.
