Sir Howard Staunton was considered one of the best chess players in the world in the 19th century. An unofficial world champion from 1843 to 1851, he was not only engaged in the practical game of chess. He was also an organizer of chess life, a journalist and author of chess manuals, a recognized theoretician of the game of chess and a creator of rules for the game itself and the way it is played. Beginning in 1845, he edited a chess column in the Illustrated London News newspaper for the next 29 years, becoming the world's most influential chess columnist. In 1847 he published Chess-Player's Handbook, the most famous of his chess book series. In 1849 Staunton signed a set of chess runners, designed by Nathaniel Cook and manufactured by John Jaques. He recommended the runners in his chess paper. Their shape has become the most popular pattern of chess runners in the world, still used today at most chess tournaments.
