HMS Prince – History
HMS Prince was launched in 1670 and was one of the most impressive ships of Royal Navy. It was built as a symbol of power of the restored Stuart monarchy. More than 1,000 mature oak trees were used to build ship. Its stern was richly decorated with carvings, gold leaf and royal symbols.
Ship carried 100 brass and iron cannons. It became an important warship and served as flagship of James, Duke of York, who later became King James II. Prince saw its first major battle in 1672 at Battle of Solebay against Dutch fleet. Ship was heavily damaged during fighting. Its hull and rigging suffered serious damage, and many crew members were killed or wounded.
In 1692, ship was rebuilt and renamed HMS Royal William. It continued to serve Royal Navy for more than 100 years. It took part in later conflicts, including War of Spanish Succession and Seven Years' War. Ship was finally broken up in 1813, almost 150 years after its keel was laid. Today, HMS Prince is remembered as a symbol of the golden age of sailing ships, skilled 17th-century shipbuilding and the rise of Royal Navy.
