The Cycladic culture is a Bronze Age culture that occurred in the third and second millennium BC mainly on the islands of the Cyclades archipelago. Its main centers were Syros (now Siros), Naxos and Milos.

Associated with the early development of the art of this culture, up to about 1900 BC, are finds of small (on average about 0.2-0.5 m high) figurines made mostly of marble, now known as Cycladic idols. Our chess pieces are inspired by such figurines.

The small figurines were placed in graves, so they may have been related to funeral rites. Larger sized figurines are believed to have been placed in places of worship. It is also believed that at least some of the figurines created were representations of deities.
