Astrolabe
Astrolabe is an astronomical computer used to determine time based on the position of the sun and stars. Thanks to it, centuries ago it was possible to find out what time it was. This trivial question today was once a great challenge in the pre-smartphone era. Thanks to it, it was possible to determine the time of phenomena, for example, such as sunrises and sunsets, it made it possible to determine the position of stars and directions. It was used to create many advanced calculations. There were about 400 of them. The astrolabe was also a popular navigation device.
The astrolabe reproduces a 3D map of the sky on a flat surface. Its history began more than 2,000 years ago. Over the centuries, knowledge was developed and more complex devices were built. Great credit for this goes to Arab scholars. Sources report that thanks to this device in the Middle Ages, for example, a very accurate map of Baghdad was created. It was thanks to them that the astrolabe came to Europe in the 12th century. Until about 1650 it was the most common astronomical instrument, then it was replaced by more precise instruments.
