Participants of the Crusades are referred to as crusaders. The crusades against Muslims include the seven major crusades and many smaller ones that were organized in the years 1095–1291, that is, from the Synod of Clermont to the conquest of Akka by the Mamluks, among the crusades against the Muslims. The main goal of the first expeditions was to reclaim the Holy Land, especially Jerusalem. Crusades in the thirteenth century also targeted Muslims in Egypt and Tunis. In addition, the Fourth Crusade, although its original goal was Palestine, was finally directed against Orthodox Constantinople despite the Pope's condemnation. After 1291, the cross movement began to die out, although the term "crusade" was also used to describe some military actions against Muslims (including the Alexandrian crusade).
