USS Constitution – History
USS Constitution was launched in 1797. It is the world's oldest commissioned naval warship still afloat.
Ship became famous during War of 1812 against Great Britain. During battle with HMS Guerriere, British cannonballs appeared to bounce off its strong wooden hull. This gave Constitution its famous nickname, "Old Ironsides".
Strong hull was based on design by naval architect Joshua Humphreys. It used very strong layers of wood, including live oak. Metal parts and copper bolts also helped create a very durable structure.
Constitution served as a warship, training ship and ceremonial vessel. It sailed across Atlantic and Mediterranean waters.
When plans were made to scrap ship in the 19th century, public support helped save it. Today USS Constitution is preserved in Boston and remains an official US Navy ship.
During its combat service, Constitution took part in 33 naval battles and was never defeated. It became a symbol of American independence, strength and naval history.
