Soleil Royal – History

Soleil Royal, meaning "Royal Sun", was one of the most impressive French warships of the 17th century. It was built for King Louis XIV.

This large three-deck ship carried 104 cannons and had a crew of almost 890 people. It was designed as a powerful warship and also as a symbol of French royal power.

The name came from Louis XIV, known as the "Sun King". Rich decoration and impressive size made Soleil Royal one of the most beautiful ships of its time.

The ship took part in important naval battles. It fought at Battle of Beachy Head in 1690 and Battle of La Hogue in 1692. After serious damage during Battle of La Hogue, Soleil Royal was later sunk in the port of Cherbourg.

Today, Soleil Royal is remembered as one of the most beautiful sailing ships of its era. It remains popular among ship model collectors and maritime history enthusiasts.
