History of the Map
Decorative map of the world made by Gerard Valck in 1686. Orbis Terrarum Nova Et Accurata Tabula is an exquisitely decorated map of the double hemisphere of the World - a magnificent example of Dutch Baroque cartography. It is a fascinating summary of geographic knowledge at the end of the 17th century, clarifying a number of issues even though some still remain unanswered. California is depicted here as an island while the outline of the North American coast is still hypothetical. The shape of Australia and New Guinea, which are combined here, also remains in doubt. In addition, the location of New Zealand is uncertain. The northern part of Japan is highly distorted while the northernmost island of Hokkaido is connected to Russia. The mythical lakes Lac Parime and Lac Xarayes are depicted in South America. The corners of the frame are filled with baroque dynamic scenes depicting the four seasons.
The map comes from Gerard Valk's atlas “Nova totius Geographia...” published in Amsterdam around 1686.
